90th Birthday Celebrations
This year we celebrate 90 years since the inception of Town Close, and the anniversary was marked by distributing tree saplings throughout the community. Emblematic of how the School and each one of our current and former pupils have grown and flourished over the course of the 90 years and will continue to grow into the future, the saplings, also, represent our ongoing commitment to the community and the wider natural environment in which it stands.
Originating as a day and boarding school for boys, Town Close has evolved through the years, becoming an educational trust in 1969 and co-educational in the late 1990s. The site has grown significantly with the addition of the Pre Prep ‘Close Lodge ‘ in 1953 and an impressive expansion of facilities including a swimming pool, sports hall, state of the art performance hall, Astro turf and cricket pavilion. Nestled within a mature woodland enclave between the Newmarket and Ipswich Roads into Norwich, the School continues to provide an idyllic setting for children to learn and play in.
We celebrated our 90 years with an afternoon tea for current pupils and families before a drinks and canapés reception for past and present associates of the School and local dignitaries that featured local produce and suppliers. Each attendee was invited to choose a tree sapling to plant in a position of their choice, propagating the spirit of Town Close throughout Norfolk and beyond whilst making a positive contribution to the wider natural environment. Looking forward to the 100th Anniversary in ten years, those present were also invited to write their hopes and aspirations for the next 10 years of Town Close on a paper leaf to be affixed to a ‘Wishing Tree’. The School looks forward to reading those wishes and tracking how the trees grow alongside the School and its pupils into the future.
