Town Close remembers former Town Close pupil, Robert Stern
As a School community, we were saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Stern, a former Town Close pupil who went on to become a leading British philosopher of his generation.
Born & educated in Norfolk, Robert Stern worked at Sheffield University from 1989, became a professor in 2000 & served as chair of the Philosophy Research Excellence Framework Panel, as president of the Aristotelian Society and the British Philosophical Association, and as editor of the European Journal of Philosophy and the Hegel Bulletin. He was, also, president of the British Society for the History of Philosophy and was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 2019. He was well known to be an influential advocate of student initiatives and of creative pursuits, spearheading the annual ‘Philosophy Rocks!’ Concert.
The Town Close ‘Stern English Prize’ is awarded at Prize Day in his name and last year’s recipient, Henry, was interested and proud to learn about the prestigious figure behind his award, another past Town Close pupil who continues to inspire the next generation.
