Year 6 Humanities Trip to France and Belgium
Year 6 Humanities Trip to France and Belgium
The Year 6 Humanities Trip incorporates a study of both the First and Second World Wars as well as the glorious medieval towns of Bruges and Ypres and the rich historical, cultural and economic traditions of Flanders. As such, the children visit museums, memorials and cemeteries which acknowledge and commemorate this rich history. This year, these visits included the evacuation beaches and Musée Dunkerque at Dunkirk, the Peace Village in Messines Belgium, the Christmas Truce memorials, Mud Corner Cemetary, the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, the Medieval Church of our Lady in Bruges and the Ypres Historical Museum. They, also, enjoyed a number of more ‘relaxed’ activities such as a boat trip along Bruges’ canals, a virtual-reality historical experience, ten-pin bowling and numerous visits to chocolate shops and markets, enabling the pupils to embrace different aspects of the local culture and enjoy the local cuisine.
A wonderful trip was enjoyed by all. Mr Kendrick was supremely impressed with the children’s enthusiasm, knowledge and interest throughout and how calm and respectful they were at the emotive sites of interest. Our sincere thanks to Mr Kendrick for leading a trip that is an undoubted highlight of Year 6 and to all the staff who accompanied and supported him.
