STEM Week
STEM Week
A week in School when we celebrate all things STEM, enjoying activities and challenges across the age groups and welcoming inspiring visitors to inspire a lifelong love of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in our pupils.
On day 1 of STEM week, our children in Years 3 – 6 worked in teams to complete a Maths Quiz in the Read Hall whilst the library was abuzz with all things STEM as the children reviewed The Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize shortlisted books. Judging them on their presentation, content & illustrations, our pupils will soon vote for their favourite.
On Day 2 of STEM Week, we were thrilled to welcome Forensic Minds into School to host a fascinating fingerprint masterclass with our Year 5 and 6 pupils. Our staff couldn’t resist the opportunity to print and examine their own fingerprints, too!
STEM Week Day 3 and we were delighted to welcome The Little Storytelling Company into School to perform ’A Pirate Adventure’ & ‘DNA Detectives’ to our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils. The Reception & Year 1 children went on an amazing pirate adventure, solving the clues to find the hidden treasure, whilst learning all about magnets, electricity, acids and alkalis as well as floating and sinking. Year 2 were the DNA detectives when the children found the answers to the questions: ’What is DNA?’ ‘Where is DNA in our bodies?’ and ‘how big is DNA?’ An amazing day of workshops!
It proved a fabulous start to Day 4 of STEM Week as our Pre Prep children sat spellbound by a Magic Science Assembly with Head of Science, Mr Chapman, and our Years 3 and 4 pupils went head to head in a House ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ STEM themed quiz in the Read Hall! Later, our Years 3 and 4 were tasked with completing a Lego Tower Challenge, working in teams to build an imaginative and tall Lego tower that could withstand the ‘earthquake test’ (table wobble) and the ‘wind test’ (wafting cardboard).
To conclude a fabulous week of STEM, Year 1 – Year 8 were thoroughly absorbed and entertained by visiting scientist Dr Ken who gave all of our children an interactive science show to remember!
Huge thanks to Mr Chapman and Mr Avenal for masterminding the week’s incredible timetable of activities.
