Town Close STEM Week

Last week, Town Close celebrated all things STEM in a week full of engaging activities, challenges and inspiring visitors!

Over the course of the week in Pre Prep, Year 1 ran their own Juice Bar incorporating their learning in Science and Maths; Reception and Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 enjoyed Lego engineering challenges hosted by the Block Bus; Year 2 built their own cars in the DT Room; Reception made their own wormeries, parachutes and rain clouds in jars; and Year 1 rotated through 3 different egg related experiments!  The Pre Prep children also completed two of the six activities to achieve their Junior Forester Award from the Royal Forestry Society, with the remaining 4 challenges to be completed before the end of the school year.

In Prep, all year groups competed in a Maths quiz; Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 enjoyed ‘Kitchen Cupboard Science’, a science based exploration of what is lurking in our kitchen cupboards led by the inspirational science storyteller, James Piercy; Year 3 welcomed ‘History Off the Page’ into School for ‘The Geology Lab’: a fantastically interactive exploration of the physical world looking at different natural materials & their properties; and our Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoyed a coding & robotics masterclass by the Royal Air Force based at RAF Marham.

In addition to these in house activities, our Year 8 F24 team were honoured to visit Classic Team Lotus & to be guided around the collection of 58 cars by Clive Chapman, the son of the Team Lotus founder, Colin Chapman. It proved an inspirational afternoon for our pupils who took the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and to find out more about the evolving car designs and the world class engineering. Our sincere thanks go to Clive for the opportunity and for giving his time so generously.

Thank you to Mr Chapman, Mr Avenal and Mr Buck for co-ordinating the week of incredible activities, experiments and visits that gave all of our pupils a fascinating insight into the world of STEM and the vast range of skills and professions that draw on the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
